Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme was launched by the government in November 2015, under Gold Monetisation Scheme. Under the scheme, the issues are made open for subscription in tranches by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in consultation with the government of India. The interested customers must note that the SGBs are government securities denominated in grams of gold. They are substitutes for holding physical gold. The individuals interested in investment in SGBs must note that the bonds bear interest at the rate of 2.50 per cent (fixed rate) per annum on the amount of initial investment. The people residing in India who are defined under Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 are eligible to invest in SGB. The eligible investors include individuals, HUFs, trusts, universities and charitable institutions.
